Hey there, my fierce financial adventurers!

When you're in one of life's crazy storms, taking control of your finances might seem like an impossible and super depressing task. But fear not! Schweet Living is here to start your journey to financial freedom today! In this article, we will show you how to budget and defeat debt without sacrificing joy along the way. And yes, that is possible!

Financial Freedom: What is it?

Now many of you might be feeling lost in the muck of your personal money, and that's okay. I was there too, several times in fact. It does not matter what your previous financial knowledge was up to this point. You made it here, and starting here is knowing where to begin cleaning up. Navigating your personal finances can be an emotional rollercoaster, so it's crucial to first remember that true wealth extends beyond monetary riches.

At Schweet Living, we believe financial freedom is not about becoming mega rich with millions and millions of dollars. We believe achieving financial freedom is feeling joy while being in control of your finances. Proverbs 22:7 reminds us that "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." This verse underscores the importance of maintaining financial control, not necessarily being rich. It is who is in control that matters: you or your money.

This definition of financial freedom empowers us to pursue our dreams but also gives a sense of fulfillment that is greater than material wealth. When you stop living paycheck to paycheck (or being the slave to the lender), your peace of mind and overall joy comes from within your heart rather than the definition of what is in your bank account.

Financial Freedom: Where to Start?

To get to that joyfully independent place, the first key is to financial freedom know where everything is. Start by gathering a list of all your accounts and how much is in each place. Once you have a handle on your total, the next, and most crucial, step is knowing where your money goes. This is the purpose of a budget.

To the average Joe, the 'B' word - budget - often gets a bad rap. Many perceive it as a restrictive and confining practice. But at Schweet Living, we see the "B word" as a liberating tool that empowers you to take charge of your financial journey. Budgeting is not about restriction; it's about intention. Let's explore the ins and outs of balancing your budget while securing your peace of mind and finding joy along the way.

How to Budget: The Start of Your Financial Freedom Journey

Creating a budget might seem as exciting as watching paint dry. But fear not—Proverbs 21:5 assures us that "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." scripture shows us by embracing the art of mindful spending, setting clear financial goals, and taming those unruly expenses, we can steer our financial ship in the right direction all while keeping our spirits high and our hearts at peace.

Budget in 3 Easy Steps

1. Gather and Understand Your Finances:

  • Compile a list of all your accounts and their respective balances.
  • Note down your total expected monthly income, including regular deposits like paychecks.
  • List all your expected monthly expenses, such as bills, gas, health/medical, travel, debt, food, clothing, and more.

2. Calculate the Difference:

  • Subtract your total expenses from your total income
  • Ideally, the remaining balance should be zero or include extra money that can be saved.

3. Dealing with the Result:

  • If you have extra money left over, allocate it towards any existing debt.
  • If the balance is negative, re-evaluate your expenses, find areas to cut back, or explore ways to increase your income to bridge the gap.

This is budgeting 101, and it may seem like a foreign language especially if you have never done it before. But like any habit, the more you practice the more it becomes second nature. Once it is second nature, you will be feeling less stressed about this part of managing your money and already gain peace of mind. Using your budget will guide you towards joy and is a building block towards financial freedom.

Next Step: Defeat Debt

Ah, debt—the relentless shadow that looms over many of us. But worry not, for Schweet Living is here to help you conquer it! Proverbs 3:27 encourages us to "Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to act." This verse emphasizes the importance of responsible debt repayment. By implementing simple strategies such as the debt snowball and setting up an actionable payoff roadmap, you can kick the debt monster goodbye and say hello to a life of financial freedom and abundance. BUT... this step is highly dependent on your budget.

Make sure your budget lists all debt payments from smallest to largest balance, not interest. The quick solution to pay down debt is to pay minimum payments for all cards. Whatever extra remains in your budget at the end of the month goes towards paying the smallest balance first. Once the smallest card is paid off, you move to the next smallest, and so on until all cards are paid off. Keep in mind, conquering debt is a small part of your overall personal financial roadmap you need to gain financial freedom. The sooner you defeat debt the sooner you will feel joy.

Not Sacrificing Joy

As you dig deep for your financial control, it's essential to keep sight of what truly matters—your joy and well-being. Matthew 6:24 advises us that "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. " This verse highlights your need to align financial pursuits with your values. By nurturing a healthy relationship with money and maintaining a balance with responsibility and fun, you can pave the way for a life filled with purpose and contentment.

Now what does that mean in terms of home management? When you have a good relationship with money, you also gain mental stability. You'll spend more time on satisfying endeavors like a new hobby, seeing friends, organizing the closet and reclaiming your health instead of stressing over how you were going to make it until next week's paycheck. Because the financial journey is under control, the rest of your attention goes into improving your home, your spirit strengthens, your confidence grows, and the more joyful you become. This is all because you started at ground zero with a budget.

To Wrap Things Up...

Creating simple financial habits bring so much power to beating discouragement and embracing joy. A budget is not prison, it is putting intention behind all your needs and goals. Paying off debt is what we are called to do if we ever want to be good stewards to our friends and family. Just these two routines alone are over half the battle of gaining control in your home because it feeds all other aspects of our lives: physical and mental well being, time management, and building community - just to name a few.
